Turnkey PCB assembly means AstroPCB handles everything: PCB fabrication, component sourcing, assembly, testing and shipping — you provide the design files and BOM, and receive finished, tested circuit board assemblies. Turnkey eliminates the logistics of managing separate fabrication and assembly vendors, coordinating component procurement with board delivery schedules, and shipping bare boards between facilities. For engineering teams focused on product development rather than supply chain management, turnkey assembly is the most efficient path from design files to working hardware.
What turnkey includes
The turnkey process begins with your design package: Gerber files, drill data, bill of materials (BOM) with manufacturer part numbers, and centroid (pick-and-place) file. The engineering team reviews the BOM for component availability, identifies any long-lead-time or end-of-life risks, and confirms that all components are in stock or orderable within the build schedule. PCB fabrication proceeds in parallel with component procurement. When boards and components arrive at the assembly line, SMT and through-hole assembly begins.
Testing and inspection options include automated optical inspection (AOI) after reflow, X-ray inspection for BGA and QFN solder joints, in-circuit test (ICT) with customer-supplied or AstroPCB-designed fixtures, functional test per customer test procedures, and boundary scan for boards with JTAG-capable components. Finished assemblies are cleaned (if required), conformal coated (if specified), and packaged for shipment.
BOM management
Component sourcing is the most variable element of turnkey assembly. Lead times range from stock (ships same day) to 52+ weeks for constrained parts. The BOM review identifies availability risks before the build begins, so you can approve alternates, adjust the schedule, or provide consigned components for unavailable parts. AstroPCB sources from authorized distributors (Digi-Key, Mouser, Arrow, Future, Avnet) to ensure genuine components with full traceability. For cost-sensitive production builds, competitive sourcing across distributors optimizes the total BOM cost.
Turnkey vs consigned vs partial turnkey
Turnkey: AstroPCB sources all components. Simplest for the customer but component costs include the sourcing markup. Consigned: the customer provides all components, shipped to the assembly facility. The customer manages procurement but controls component cost and supplier selection. Partial turnkey: the customer provides selected components (typically high-value ICs, connectors or custom parts) and AstroPCB sources the rest (passives, standard discretes, common ICs). Partial turnkey balances cost control on expensive parts with convenience on commodity components.
Prototype vs production assembly
Prototype assembly (1-50 boards) prioritizes speed and flexibility. Stencil fabrication, component kitting and machine programming are set up for the specific build. Production assembly (100+ boards) amortizes setup costs over larger quantities, optimizes component placement sequence for throughput, and applies statistical process control to ensure consistent quality across the production run. Both use the same assembly equipment and quality standards.
