PCBWay vs JLCPCB Comparison
Comparing two popular PCB prototype services for complex projects.
PCBWay and JLCPCB are two of the most recognized names in online PCB ordering, particularly for prototype and small-batch boards. Both offer web-based quoting, fast turnaround and competitive pricing for simple constructions. But as board complexity increases — higher layer counts, controlled impedance, HDI features, specialty materials or production volumes — the differences between them, and between them and engineering-focused manufacturers, become significant. This comparison examines where each platform excels and where their limitations may affect your project.
Pricing and quoting
JLCPCB has built its reputation on aggressive prototype pricing. Standard 2-layer and 4-layer FR-4 boards in small quantities (5 to 10 pieces) are priced at or near cost, sometimes under $2 for a set of 5 boards with standard specifications. PCBWay pricing for equivalent simple boards is slightly higher but still competitive. Both platforms use automated online quoting systems that return instant pricing based on board dimensions, layer count, quantity and selected options.
The pricing advantage of both platforms diminishes as complexity increases. Controlled impedance adds a surcharge. HDI features (microvias, sequential lamination) push pricing into a different tier. Specialty materials (Rogers, PTFE, polyimide) may not be available at all through the standard online quoting flow and require manual quotation. For boards above 8 layers or with tight tolerance requirements, the gap between instant-quote platforms and engineering-focused manufacturers narrows considerably.
Capabilities comparison
JLCPCB supports boards up to 20 layers with minimum trace/space of 3.5 mil for standard process and additional charges for tighter features. PCBWay advertises similar capabilities with slightly more flexibility on non-standard requests through their manual quotation path. Both support ENIG, HASL, OSP and other common surface finishes. Both offer basic impedance control, though the tolerance and simulation methodology may differ from what a dedicated impedance-controlled manufacturer provides.
For advanced constructions — 7-step HDI, rigid-flex with dynamic flex zones, RF boards on Rogers 4350B or PTFE, heavy copper above 4 oz, or ceramic substrates — both platforms either cannot support the requirement or route the order to a partner factory where quality control and engineering communication may be less direct.
Assembly services
Both PCBWay and JLCPCB offer SMT assembly services integrated with their board fabrication. JLCPCB’s assembly service is tightly coupled with their component library (LCSC parts), which offers excellent pricing on common components but limits selection for specialized or brand-specific parts. PCBWay supports both consigned and turnkey assembly with broader component sourcing, though lead times may be longer for turnkey orders with hard-to-source parts.
Quality and consistency
For simple boards ordered through the standard online flow, both platforms deliver acceptable quality at their price points. The variability tends to increase with complexity: tighter trace/space, more layers, impedance control and non-standard materials introduce more opportunities for process variation. Neither platform publishes detailed process capability data (Cpk for drill registration, impedance tolerance distribution, plating thickness uniformity) in the way that automotive or aerospace-qualified manufacturers do.
For products where board quality directly affects end-product reliability — medical devices, automotive electronics, aerospace systems, telecommunications infrastructure — the risk profile of a lowest-price online platform may not match the reliability requirement of the application.
Engineering support
This is where the gap between instant-quote platforms and engineering-focused manufacturers is widest. PCBWay and JLCPCB both offer customer support, but neither provides pre-fabrication DFM review at the depth that a manufacturer with dedicated applications engineers delivers. When a stackup needs to be redesigned for impedance targets, when a via structure needs to change for reliability, or when a material substitution is needed due to availability — having an engineering contact who understands the design intent makes the difference between a successful build and a costly re-spin.
When to consider an alternative
PCBWay and JLCPCB are strong choices for simple prototypes, student projects, maker boards and cost-sensitive production of uncomplicated designs. When your project involves controlled impedance, HDI, rigid-flex, RF materials, heavy copper, ceramic substrates, or any construction where manufacturing engineering judgment affects the outcome — an engineering-led manufacturer provides value that a self-service platform cannot.
