Low Volume PCB Assembly
Prototype and small-batch assembly from 1 to 500 boards.
Low volume PCB assembly serves the gap between a single prototype and full production. Whether you need 5 boards for design validation, 50 for a customer demo, or 500 for a pilot production run, AstroPCB assembles small batches with the same process controls, inspection standards and engineering rigor applied to high-volume orders. There is no minimum order quantity.
Why low-volume assembly requires production-grade process
Small-batch assembly is not a relaxed version of production assembly. The SMT placement accuracy, reflow profile and inspection criteria must be identical to production parameters — otherwise test results from a low-volume build cannot predict production yield. AstroPCB uses the same pick-and-place equipment, solder paste, reflow ovens and AOI systems for a 5-piece lot that it uses for a 5,000-piece production run. The only difference is setup amortization, which is reflected in the per-unit price rather than in process shortcuts.
Typical low-volume applications
Engineering validation: assemble 3 to 10 boards to verify the new revision works before committing to tooling and production inventory. Customer samples: build 20 to 50 units for customer evaluation, certification testing or field trials. Pilot production: manufacture 100 to 500 units to stress-test the supply chain, validate test procedures and confirm yield before scaling to full production. Bridge builds: maintain product supply with small batches while a production line change, component qualification or factory transfer is in progress.
No minimum order quantity
AstroPCB accepts low volume PCB assembly orders starting at 1 piece. There is no MOQ surcharge — the quotation reflects actual setup, material and processing costs for the requested quantity. For quantities under 10, the per-unit cost is naturally higher due to setup amortization, but there are no hidden minimums or penalty fees.
Component sourcing options
Low-volume builds support full turnkey (AstroPCB sources all components), partial turnkey (customer furnishes selected components, AstroPCB sources the rest), or fully consigned (customer provides all components). For turnkey low-volume orders, the engineering team reviews BOM availability before quoting and flags any components with long lead times or minimum-order constraints that could affect small-batch economics.
Assembly process
The assembly process follows the same sequence regardless of quantity. Solder paste is printed using laser-cut stainless steel stencils with automated paste inspection. SMT components are placed using high-speed pick-and-place machines with vision alignment. Reflow profiles are set per IPC J-STD-020 guidelines for the component and board combination. Through-hole components are soldered using selective soldering or hand soldering depending on quantity and geometry. Every board passes automated optical inspection. X-ray inspection is performed when the assembly includes BGA, QFN or other bottom-terminated packages.
Quality and documentation
All assemblies are inspected to IPC-A-610 Class 2 by default, with Class 3 available for medical, aerospace and high-reliability applications. First-article inspection is performed on the initial board of every batch. Inspection reports, component traceability records and test data are available upon request.
