Turnkey PCB assembly consolidates component sourcing, board fabrication, assembly and testing under a single purchase order. Instead of coordinating separate suppliers for bare boards, components and assembly services, a turnkey program lets the manufacturing partner manage the entire build — from BOM procurement through final electrical test and shipment.
What turnkey PCB assembly includes
A turnkey order covers every step between receiving your design files and shipping tested, assembled boards. The scope typically includes bare board fabrication (or acceptance of customer-furnished boards), component procurement from authorized distributors, solder paste stencil fabrication, SMT placement, reflow soldering, through-hole insertion and wave or selective soldering where required, in-circuit test or functional test, conformal coating if specified, and final visual inspection under IPC-A-610 criteria.
AstroPCB sources components exclusively from authorized channels and franchised distributors. Every component lot is traceable to the manufacturer date code and distributor invoice. For critical or long-lead components, the engineering team identifies procurement risks at the quotation stage so you can approve alternates or pre-order stock before the build starts.
When turnkey assembly makes sense
Turnkey PCB assembly is most valuable when one or more of the following conditions apply: the BOM contains a large number of unique part numbers, making self-sourcing time-consuming; the team prefers to issue a single purchase order rather than manage multiple vendor relationships; the build includes both SMT and through-hole components that require coordinated process steps; or the project is a prototype-to-pilot transition where speed matters more than component cost optimization.
For high-volume production where component pricing leverage is critical, a consigned or partial-turnkey model may offer better unit economics. AstroPCB supports all three models — full turnkey, partial turnkey (customer furnishes key components), and fully consigned (customer provides all components).
BOM review and component engineering
Before quoting a turnkey build, the engineering team reviews the bill of materials for component availability, lead times, end-of-life status and potential alternates. This review catches problems before they delay the build: an out-of-stock connector, a resistor value available only in a non-standard package, or a semiconductor on allocation with 30-week lead times.
The BOM review output includes a priced, sourced BOM with distributor quotes, a risk flag for any component with lead time exceeding the target build date, and recommended alternates for any flagged parts. You approve the final BOM before procurement begins.
Assembly capabilities
SMT placement supports components from 01005 (0.4 mm x 0.2 mm) through large QFP, BGA and connectors. Fine-pitch BGA down to 0.4 mm ball pitch is handled with solder paste inspection (SPI) and automated optical inspection (AOI) at every reflow panel. Through-hole assembly uses selective soldering or wave soldering depending on component geometry and board construction. Mixed-technology boards with both SMT and through-hole components are assembled in the correct process sequence to protect temperature-sensitive parts.
Testing and inspection
Standard inspection includes automated optical inspection (AOI) after reflow and after through-hole processing. X-ray inspection is available for BGA, QFN and bottom-terminated components where solder joints are not visible. In-circuit test (ICT) and functional test can be incorporated when the customer provides test fixtures and procedures. First-article inspection reports are generated for every new assembly to confirm component placement, orientation and solder quality before the full batch proceeds.
